Shirt: Liverpool 19/20 Home

Album: None

When you were younger, did your mum always tell you to put on clean underwear in case you got hit by a bus? I get the idea behind it, if you get knocked down by the 14A the last thing you need to be worrying about is the paramedics seeing your skidmarked pants. On the other hand, if a double decker had hit you there’d probably be some fresh skidmarks in there anyway.

The point is, always be prepared. I left the house for this walk looking clean, smart and ready for anything, you never know what might happen or who you might meet. Similar advice should be passed on to kit manufacturers, because any strip has the potential to become a title-winning kit. Just like this one I wore today.

If you’re a Red, you’ll remember the heartbreaking 13/14 season, when we were just 2 points away from lifting the Premier League title for the first time in 23 years. A tragic “if only” season, it remains a bittersweet year for any Liverpool fan. But if I’m being honest, there was a small part of me that was relived. You see we were bang in the middle of the Warrior era of kits, and that year they were horrible.

Perhaps I’m being a little unfair, the home was passable, a sort of modern homage to the ‘84 European Cup winning shirt, but it’ll never make it onto any list of our greatest kits ever. The away and third *do* make it on to lists, but unfortunately the kind of lists titled ‘Worst Shirts of the Premier League Era’. Both of them are allegedly based on classic Liverpool Adidas designs of the early 90s but I can only assume that those designs were described to a blind man and then drawn by his dog. The result can only be described as some sort of digital houndstooth nightmare that would’ve made us a laughing stock if we’d have lifted a trophy in it. Can you imagine that purple and black monstrosity being immortalised in celebratory photos for years to come?

Thank goodness that New Balance were at the helm in 19/20. We had a world class shirt to go with a world class team, the dark ‘red pepper’ colour lends maturity to the strip, while the gold accent colour and white pinstripes were a nod to the 80s era of success that Liverpool were hoping to replicate.

Salah, Mane, Henderson and co were all dressed for success in this shirt, and success they had. They went unbeaten in the league from August until the end of February, and never left the top spot at all for the whole season. It’s the shirt seen in the trophy presentations for the Super Cup, Club World Cup and, of course, the Premier League.

The shirt is classy, classic, and will be sought after in years to come. You can wear it with pride safe in the knowledge that you’ll look good should any paramedics have to tend to you in a bus related mishap.

Just make sure those Y-fronts have been washed as well.

Shirt Rating: 10/10
