Shirt: Liverpool 93/95 Away
Album: Jollification, The Lightning Seeds

Now, I put off wearing this shirt for three full days. It was supposed to get its moment in the sun on Tuesday, but the problem was…there wasn’t any sun. It rained non stop until today, and this is very much a fair weather shirt.
What you see here is my first ever football shirt. Well, not this actual one. What was left of the real first one was disposed of in secret by my mum, after I’d exploded every seam and scrubbed off the felt details with a million slide tackles.
Consequently, this shirt lives a pampered life. I treat it like it’s made from butterfly wings and spiders webs, like it would turn to dust if it ever sees sunlight. Which is a shame really because it’s a shirt that needs to be seen.
The bright white body punctuated by the stark black stripes on the torso, all framed by those gorgeous emerald green sleeves. The tricolour collar and cuffs finish things off nicely, while the central badge kept things fresh, the first of only 3 times Liverpool have relocated the crest, also recoloured to match the rest of the shirt. Nice touch.

Did you know that the Lightning Seeds got their name from the Prince song Raspberry Beret? “Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees” is how the lyric is supposed to go. Fun little fact isn’t it. And this album is all about fun. Breezy, lighthearted and uplifting, Ian Broudies vocals are very easy to listen to and coupled with catchy melodies the whole thing is a delight.
The only criticism I’d level at the album is that maybe it’s just too light, a theory supported by the fact that none of the songs on this album (even the stand out ‘Lucky You’) cracked the UK top 10.
Like the shirt though, it’s a stylish, under appreciated 90s gem.
