Shirt: Liverpool’s 12/13 Third
Album: Volbeat – Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie
(Both suggested by @FootyShirtsMK on Twitter, cheers mate!)
Todays shirt reminded me of my days as a skateboarding teenager. Purple with bright orange highlights, finished with tribal graphics on the sleeves. All I needed was spiked hair and flared jeans and it’d be like 1999 again.
Even at the time, Warriors design choices for the shirt seemed odd. It was all to do with branding of course, Warrior were making American sports equipment before they turned their hand to ‘soccer jerseys’, the brash colours and tribal flourishes make perfect sense in the country that invented the monster truck but over in England it’s like getting Motörhead to play at your garden party.
Mrs Kit For Brains threw in her verdict when she saw it hanging ready on the wardrobe, “Whoever chose that must really not like you!”
I begged to differ. “It’s quite cool actually, Luis Suarez wore this when he scored his second hat-trick in a row vs Norwich!”
“Who is Louis Waress?” she asked
That could be the only good memory of the shirt actually, it was used in just two matches, a 5-2 away win at Norwich and other being a 1-0 away defeat to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League.
Still, the shirt itself is pretty comfortable, this is my usual size but it’s quite a loose fit, and the fabric is pretty soft but not very warm for our walk at -1c.
Luckily I had Volbeat to soundtrack my walk and take my mind off the relentless icy mist that was soaking deep into my core and making me colder than a politician’s handshake.
Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie is the Danish band’s 6th album, and despite being listed as hard rock/metal, the songs are pretty accessible even if you wouldn’t consider either genre normally. Either that or I’ve been desensitised by listening to Iron Maiden and Metallica for years.
Volbeat, I’m told, draw inspiration from classic artists such as Elvis and Johnny Cash, although my untrained ear couldn’t quite hear it. Still, very enjoyable with some great riffs and anthemic hooks, I’ll definitely be taking a trip through their back catalogue.
Although today I probably should’ve listened to Blink 182 for the full 1999 experience. Probably still fit those flared jeans.
Shirt rating: 3/10
Album rating: 7/10
